Cabbies talk up the Town

LONDON cabbies are planning to tell their passengers just where to go -The Geelong Region.
Six cab drivers spent the day in town yesterday as part of a tour of Victoria in the lead-up to the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games. The Taxi Tourism Ambassador Program plans to get the Games and Victoria, including the Geelong region, on the lips of Londoners by spreading the word through the city's famous cabbies.
The six ambassadors were chosen from 25 cabs who had their vehicles transformed with an image of the Twelve Apostles to promote the Games to UK tourists.
Cabbie Adrian Torlini said after driving around with the beautiful landscape on his taxi he couldn't wait to see the real deal. He even suggested the Apostles become a Victorian Tourist icon to rival Sydney's Opera House. "Or your bollards, They are absolutely fantastic"Mr Torlini said.
Essex cabbie John Godfrey said he had been knocked out by how friendly Australians had been and the more peaceful lifestyle."The roads seem so quiet it is like early morning in London"he said.
The cab drivers will spend the next week travelling along the Great Southern Touring Route visiting Bells Beach, Apollo Bay and Loch Ard Gorge, among other locations.
Getting to know the Great Ocean Road shouldn't be too hard for the cabbies, who spend about four years learning 25,000 streets and 320 routes within a six mile radius of london to gain "the knowledge" and their taxi badge.
